Vitamin E Acetate Study

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has officially identified vitamin E acetate as the definite contaminant of concern in the 49-state outbreak of deadly vaping-related injuries. As of November 5, 2019, the CDC has reported more than 2,000 cases of vaping-related injuries in the last three months, including 39 deaths in 24 states.

The CDC published a new study where investigators tested fluid samples from the lungs of 29 patients from 10 states. Vitamin E acetate was found in all 29 patients’ lung fluid samples. THC was found in 23 out of 28 patients’ samples. The findings were published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report on November 9, 2019.

Vitamin E acetate has already come up in New York’s investigations of illicit vaping pods linked to the cases, however the CDC’s new results are the first to detect the substance in patients’ lungs.

California is the largest cannabis consumer market in the world. Unfortunately, California is also the largest illicit market for cannabis in the world. We join with others in recommending that Californians purchase cannabis and manufactured cannabis products from licensed retailers to ensure that the products have been tested for regulatory compliance and are safe for consumption.
