On February 20, 2020, the California Department of Food and Agriculture (“CDFA”) released proposed regulations for the appellations of origin for cannabis. An appellation of origin is a protected designation that identifies the geographical origin of a product and how that product was produced. The most well-known examples include Bordeaux (wine made from grapes grown in Bordeaux, France), Champagne (made from grapes grown in Champagne, France), and Tequila (made from blue agave grown in Jalisco, Mexico).

CDFA’s mission with the Cannabis Appellations Program is to promote regional cannabis products and local businesses, prevent the misrepresentation of a cannabis product’s origin, and support consumer confidence about a cannabis product’s origin and characteristics.

CDFA’s proposed regulations include amendments to the existing cultivation regulations, particularly in relation to advertising/marketing, packaging and labeling, and record keeping.
