The surgeon general said that people should wash their hands before donning a mask, and avoid touching their faces while wearing one.

On April 7, 2020, City of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti issued a new emergency worker protection order requiring that all essential service employees wear face coverings while at work. The order, which takes effect Friday, April 10, 2020, also requires that all shoppers also wear face masks. Businesses should refuse service to customers who are not wearing face masks.

What Does This Mean For Employers?

Employers of essential businesses are required to provide face masks to employees or reimburse employees for purchasing their own face masks used for work.

Employers are further required to enforce social distancing for both the public and employees, provide clean restrooms to their employees, and allow employees to wash their hands every thirty (30) minutes.

The order also recommends that, whenever possible, businesses install plexiglass barriers between cashiers and customers at all points of sale.  This is a recommendation, NOT a requirement.

The LAPD can issue citations if employees are not wearing face masks.
